Sailing Accidents and Investigations - the work of the MAIB

Guest Speaker: Roger Brydges

Have you ever had a near-miss?  Have you ever run aground when you hadn't planned to?  How would you deal with someone falling over the side?

Roger has sailed all his life and worked for the government's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) for 25 years, retiring in 2021.  During this time he has been involved in most of its investigations of sailing boat accidents.  The evening will feature case studies of man-overboard incidents, keel failures, groundings and collisions.  Roger will also describe the MAIB's role in promoting safety afloat through its published Reports, containing valuable lessons for all of us.

  • This talk will be live in the Papercourt clubhouse. We encourage members to attend the clubhouse and catch up with friends there.

  • For non-attendees, by reasons of distance, or health, this evening's presentation will also be broadcast on Zoom over the internet.

  • The Zoom link will be sent by separate email to club members nearer the time; for non members who wish to participate via Zoom, please contact the membership secretary, membership@guildfordsailing.org who will send you the link.
